Discover the Hidden Soul of Trastevere: Underground Rome Treasures
Step off the beaten path and into the heart of Trastevere, one of Rome’s most charming and well-preserved historic neighbourhoods. With its winding alleyways, ancient churches, and traditional bakeries, Trastevere offers an authentic and relaxed experience of Roman life, far from the crowds.
Your journey begins at the stunning Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, a jewel of medieval architecture famed for its shimmering golden mosaics. From there, we’ll stroll through cobbled streets to explore hidden courtyards and local landmarks.
We continue our discovery at the Basilica of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, built over the home of the noble Roman martyr. Here, you’ll admire exquisite baroque interiors and descend into archaeological remains of Roman houses—walls, shrines, mosaics, and even a granary—amazingly preserved beneath the modern city.
Please note: Due to ongoing restorations, we will not visit the underground of San Crisogono at this time. Instead, the tour concludes with a guided walk to the Jewish Ghetto, where layers of ancient and Renaissance Rome meet in a unique cultural crossroads.
A licensed Roman archaeologist leads this small-group tour and offers a rare opportunity to explore Rome underground, uncovering millennia of history hidden beneath its vibrant streets.
