Ravenna the Capital of Mosaics (Recording)
Virtual Guided Tour
Ravenna in the Emilia-Romagna region of Northern Italy was the capital city of the Western Roman Empire from 402 AD until the empire collapsed in 476, but it then served as the capital of the Ostrogothic Kingdom until it was re-conquered in 540 by the Byzantine Empire under Justinianus. During this time the city flourished and had some amazing Byzantine paleochristian Churches and Monuments, like San Vitale and Sant'Apollinare in Classe. For its well-preserved late Roman and Byzantine architecture: eight of these buildings are listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site as "Early Christian Monuments of Ravenna". We'll discover the turbulent life of Galla Placidia, daughter of Theodosius, in Constantinople, Rome where she was kidnapped during the first barbarian invasion and made marry a Goth King in Spain, before returning to Italy and settling in Ravenna where her son became Emperor. But above all the history and the monuments, like the tomb of Theodoricus, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, and then the Tomb of the Italian poet Dante Alighieri, we will enjoy the beauty of the glittering Byzantine-style mosaics which are the true marvel of this ancient capital.
