The Baths in Ancient Rome were a lot more than just a leisurely activity, they became one of the main distinctive traits of the Age of the Empire and a fundamental moment in the Romans's public life.

The Baths of Caracalla are the finest example of great Roman baths and were one of the biggest thermae complexes ever built:  tall walls, large halls, mosaics, statues in a generally good state of conservation.

The construction was started by Emperor Septimius Severus but opened by his son Caracalla in 216 A.D. The baths have a rectangular layout, with a central body, which was accessed by four main doors on the northeastern side, and functional spaces (swimming pools, gymnasiums, changing rooms) arranged symmetrically along a single axis. 

We will discover how the bats worked, and see the evolution of the Roman habit of bathing from the late republic to the end of the empire.
