Etruscan Places - Tarquinia and Cerveteri
Treasures of TUSCIA
Virtual Experience
Of all the ancient populations of pre-Roman Italy, the Etruscans certainly hold a special place: their civilization was highly advanced and sophisticated and they simply disappeared in the first century BC by being absorbed into the Roman Civilization. As their cities faded into oblivion and so did their language and culture, their burials revealed, thousands of years later, their greatness!
The virtual tour will start from the Necropolis of Banditaccia in Cerveteri, just a few miles northwest of Rome. In Cerveteri there are thousands of tombs in different styles, from tombs carved into the rock to structures in the shape of huts. The necropolis stretches for about 2 kilometers and is laid out like a small town, a real city of the dead.
The tour will continue to explore also the historical center and the Museo Nazionale Cerite: this small local museum houses various exhibits from the early Iron Age to the Roman era. The archaeological excavations of the areas have revealed the remains of two temples in the Tuscan style, as well as important artifacts, a fascinating visit.
A few more miles north, the Necropolis of Monterozzi (little hills) in Tarquini is the most marvelous ancient cemetery in the whole world. In Total there are over five thousand family tombs, and a few hundred of them are richly painted and decorated with mythological scenes, banquets, even sex scenes, and of course Etruscan mythology, similar to the greek and roman ones. We will discover this incredible heritage well worth the visit also in person!
