The Circus Maximus: Sports and Games in Ancient Rome  - Virtual Guided Tour

The Circus Maximus is one of the most iconic monuments of Ancient Rome although very little survives to this day, it has a similar fascination as the Colosseum and other imposing structures where thousands gathered for sports. Perched in the valley between the Palatine Hill, the Aventine, and the Tiber River, the Circus became a place of sports and celebration since the very foundation of Rome: here the Romans celebrated the very first games of its history on the first anniversary of the foundation of the city, and here the rape of the Sabins was consumed. During the Imperial times up to 150000 people could watch the races, or maybe up to double that figure according to some accounts.

Sports were a central part of ancient Roman life and we will expand our virtual tour to other games of the ancient world, including stadia and other sports including ball games and board games!
